If you’re expecting a baby, you’ve probably already been told how quickly those early days fly by. Choosing between a Fresh 48 session and a newborn session can feel a little overwhelming — both offer beautiful ways to preserve your baby’s first chapter, but they tell different parts of the story.

As a New Orleans newborn and birth photographer, I often walk families through the differences so they can choose what best fits their vision. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide.

What Is a Fresh 48 Session?

A Fresh 48 session takes place in the first day or two after your baby is born, traditionally in the hospital...however, can also occur in a birth center, or at home if you’ve delivered there.

  • Timing: Within the first 24–48 hours after birth
  • Style: Documentary and natural, no props or posing
  • Details Captured: Hospital bracelets, first feedings, siblings meeting, your baby’s earliest expressions

Think of it as a way to remember the magic of those very first hours — the raw, real, unfiltered beginning of life with your little one.

What Is an In-Home Newborn Session?

A newborn session typically happens a bit later... usually when your baby is around 1–3 weeks old. Depending on your style preference, this can be in your home or in a studio. (I, however, only do in-home sessions).

  • Timing: 7–21 days old
  • Style: Can be lifestyle (at home, relaxed) or posed (studio, styled setups)
  • Details Captured: Sleepy snuggles, family cuddles, nursery details, more polished portraits

This gives you time to settle in as a family, recover from birth, and still capture your baby while they’re tiny and fresh.

Key Differences Between Fresh 48 and Newborn Photography

  • Timing → Fresh 48 is immediate; newborn sessions give you a little breathing room.
  • Location → Fresh 48 happens in your birth space; newborn sessions are at home or in a studio.
  • Look & Feel → Fresh 48 is raw, documentary, and fleeting; newborn sessions are more relaxed, polished, and styled.
  • Memories Preserved → Fresh 48 captures the very first introductions and hospital details; newborn photos focus more on family life and baby’s early personality.

Do You Need to Choose Just One?

Not at all! Many families in New Orleans choose both. A Fresh 48 session captures the brand-newness of birth, while a newborn session tells the story of your baby’s earliest days at home. Together, they create a fuller picture of this once-in-a-lifetime chapter.

Which Is Right for You?

  • Choose a Fresh 48 if: you love documentary-style photos, want to remember the hospital/birth center experience, or feel drawn to raw, fleeting details.
  • Choose a Newborn Session if: you prefer more polished portraits, want time to recover before photos, or envision cozy family images at home.
  • Choose Both if: you don’t want to miss a single part of the story.
